As part of an educational training scheme at Studio 174 in Kingston Jamaica, structured as a twofold artists’ residency and summer school, we were invited to participate with six curated artists’ film programmes. Young people from the downtown area of Kingston worked together with students from the University of the West Indies and resident artists on a series of artistic works in various disciplines, including filmmaking, painting, radio, sound art, and photography. The workshops were organised by Openvizor and lead by resident artists Anton Kats and The Rainbow Collective.
The curated programmes were organized thematically. To reflect the interests of the participants we made a selection based on six keywords: dreams, poetry, portrait, music, history, and performance, around which we structured the programmes.
Workshop programme 1: Dreams
- In Dreams | Samuel Blain | UK 2011 | 3'| HD Video
In Dreams is an experimental documentary that visualizes the dreams of ordinary individuals. I asked 4 people to discuss their most vivid, memorable dream. The film is my final year graduation film from Northumbria University.
- My Parents Read Dreams I've Had About Them | Neil Goldberg | USA 1998 | 8' 30"| Video
As the title suggests, in this work I videotaped my parents reading a series of dreams I've had about them. The dreams date from the past several years and incorporate a wide range of imagery and subject matter. I provided my parents with no direction except to read the dreams in whatever manner they wished. - N.G.
- The Psychology of Dream Analysis | Rian Johnson | USA 2003 | 10' 26"| Video
A short made by Rian Johnson and Steve Yedlin. It was shot on DV and only a DVD copy survives. With Daniele Taddei and Craig Starck. Narrated by Angela Bettis. Johnson won the Special Jury Prize for Originality of Vision at the 2005 Sundance Film Festival with his debut feature film, Brick. In March 2015, it was confirmed that Johnson would write and direct Star Wars Episode VIII.
- Ben Boyer and the Phenomenology of Automobile Branding | Rian Johnson | USA 2003 | 10' 26"| Video
Rian Johnson made this film in 2001 for Slamdance's "$99 Special" program, where they gave you 99 cents to make a short about anything you wanted. His uncle Starck did the narration.
- Blessed are the Dreams of Men | Jem Cohen | USA 2006 | 9' 15" | 16mm transferred to digital video
Moving towards an unknown destination, a group of anonymous passengers float through an unidentified landscape. Built from Cohen's archive documenting his travels, the film can be seen as a curious parable. The film's subheading refers to the Old Testament, Daniel chapter 11, verse 40:
"And at the time of the end shall the king of the south push at him: and the king of the north shall come against him like a whirlwind with chariots, and with horsemen, and with many ships; and he shall enter into the countries, and shall overflow and pass over."
